Spray Powder.

Wow it has been months since my last post.
What with Christmas and the new year etc, all I can say in mitigation is that we've just had our busiest start to a new year for about half a decade, and I've been on a printing autopilot.
Anyway on to our topic. Can you guess which sheet has got spray powder on it?
That's right they both have.
Every sheet has a near invisible dusting of powder on it to separate it from the following sheet which lies on top, this will help the sheet dry properly and avoid the printers nightmare of them sticking together.
Don't worry, the top sheet here was recycled, way too much powder on that one.

2012 Evolve Calendar

Wow what a stunner this calendar is!
It will be sent to every printshop in the country (no pressure there then)
It took a few weeks to complete and with plenty of press passes to make sure that it was perfect, which of course it was.
Highlight for me is the 2012 Olympic planner.
Just peal off the backing and put it on a smooth surface.
It will a absolutely leave no stickiness whatsoever. Amazing!

Love printing for 'Pages Creative' the jobs are always straight forward with crisp and clean design.

Pull out sheets.

Do you realise that when we print a job we keep every sheet that we pull out?
So if there is a problem with the printing of a job we can quickly flick through the sheets to see how many sheets have been affected.
This stack is from my press, but we have Jim here as a scale model so you can see how high the stack has become.
I had better send the older ones out for recycling.
That's the paper of course, not Jim.

Well not really a job, buy a print test on 90gsm Cyclus for our MD David Peeling.

How do you clean them rollers

Eeeeuuu! How do you get all that ink off the rollers?
Well, most machines will now clean them on a programme mode, where by the machine will gather speed to around seven IPH (impressions per hour) while small jets will spray white sprite type liquid on to the rollers.
The wash up blade (see pic's) will then be engaged at just the right pressure against one of the rollers to mop up the thinned out ink.
It won't take long, around five minutes normally.
You must be careful that it doesn't dry out to much, if it does you'll hear a big squeal from the rubber blade on the spinning rollers and worst still a massive cheer from your fellow printers.
WHOORRRAAA!

It's always nice to see a master and his apprentice at work.
Craig is being shown the correct way to take out and reinstall damper rollers by Jim Cavindish one of our most experience printers. Jim has 47 years of service in print trade thus far. . . Wow!
Actually, this has given me an idea for another blog post,
I wonder how many print years in total do we printers have at Severnprint?

One must keep a clean press you know and they always seem to run a lot better after you do so.
Typically though I'm called over to 4 colour to do a rush job, so the cleaning must wait

Here we have a rarity, David & Nigel Peeling on a press with their hands dirty.
No they were not helping out and giving yours truly a well earned rest, but posing for our friends at Fuji.
We are working with them and Paul Sherfield from Missing Horse Consultancy in conjunction with trying to get better coverage and ink definition from our plates on uncoated stocks. The science never stops eh? But it is good to be on the cutting edge of print as always.

Printing Rollers

Hello Print Fan's.
Below is a configuration of the printing rollers of a Heidelberg CD Speedmaster.
As you'll be able to see from the roller specifications there are many different sizes and materials used, from rubber to rilsan, stainless steel and ceramic to chromium.
Ink will go into the duct at the top and water in from the right hand side as you see it.
There are 20 rollers per unit and we have 5 units.
Oh and a coater. But that's another story.

Staccato Print.

Today we were printing our first 2012 calendar, but with a slight twist, for me it was the first time I had printed with a staccato screen.
Staccato screening is fairly new process which delivers finer mico dots to the paper for a nearer photographic quality which also eliminates moire and rosette patterns.
We think the effect is stunning and it more than holds it's own when printing on uncoated stocks too.
Is this the future of litho printing?

Black 7

Today Craig was printing in Black 7.
It's part of the Pantone range but you will need to mix the black with 25 percent of silver.
This will get the picture to look more like a lead pencil drawing.
The customer spent many years with other printers trying out different screen values, but it was us who suggested using black 7.
Needless to say he's been coming back to us ever since.
Nice one Craig.

What a gift, rollers.

It feels like your birthday when you come into work and find a brand new roller on your press.
In this case it was a plate damper roller which is made of rubber.
There are 20 rollers per unit on the Heidelberg CD Speedmaster. Most are made from rubber, apart from rider rollers which are made of a very tough nylon.
We have 5 units on my press so that makes at least 100
rollers.
You will be looking to pay around £250 per roller.
Wow that's a lot of cash. Best get back to work.

Breakdown.

Came in this morning to find the press had broken down.
It happened last night on the other shift.
Apparently the swing arm (pictured) started to clunk.
This is what takes the sheet of paper on the start of it's journey through the press.
So I've now got to wait for an engineer to arrive.
Oh well it's times like these that you can do that extra cleaning you've been meaning to do, and of course more peppermint tea.

Catch up.

Catch up or as some people say 'scumming',
This is when we do not have enough water going on to the plate or of course too much ink on the rollers.
Years ago you could spot catch up at the grip edge of the paper. Now that we do not use I.P.A in the water and we use plates that develop on the press, catch up may appear anywhere. So we must be even more eagle eyed than before. Can you spot it in this picture??
Mmmm ok, this time it was easy!

Metering Roller

This is a metering roller and it's job is to pick up water from the water pan bellow and send it directly to the printing plate.
Too much water and the print will look light and washed out. Too little and the ink will start catching up.
What's catching up I hear you ask!?
Well perhaps that should be on the next blog.

This week Adrian and I have been printing a brochure for the highly acclaimed cutlery maker Robert Welch.
All 4 colours make up the very dense black that you can see. Register has to be more than perfect. Otherwise you would be seeing double.
An engineer was called to check our grippers which lost us a shifts print, but the trouble was worth it as the job looks stunning.

Getting a Grip

Each sheet that goes through a printing press needs to be gripped with just the right amount pressure. To little and the sheet will drop between units or stick to the blanket.
Too much pressure and the front edge will get damaged.

In this photo the ink has been moving just a fraction on the sheet, less than a quarter of a millimeter.

So i'm greasing every gripper up as one gripper must be sticking.
So better get a grip.

Kinyo Blankets

The Kinyo Blankets we use are 1:95 mm thick.
Ink from the printing plate first transfers to the rubber blanket then on to the sheet of paper at exactly the right pressure to get the correct impression.

Sealer......

Sealer is a type of varnish we put on coated stocks to stop them from
scuffing and to protect the ink from coming off on one's hand. Here we
have a blue solid of Pantone 299 from a well known hardwear store.
Think they will like this job as there were no hickies in sight.

When in strict diet mode prior to competition, Leon would have to follow a rigorous slimming plan for most of the week, except that is, on a Friday when it would become 'Fat Friday'. This when he could eat whatever he liked and the body would not recognize the about of food taken in and just dump it. Cleaver Eh!

Heidelburg Speedmaster SM/74

Reset rollers

Resetting of rollers.
If you can see darker lines running accross the rollers, this is what
is called 'the nip' and has to be set on each side of the rollers by
Allen Keys.
Normaly the nip is set to anywhere between 3mm or 5mm. Differant
rollers need differant nip's.

Wow machine boards ...... (these are boards that our work will lovingly sit on till they are dry enough to be move)
But a really funny thing happened today.....
We at Severnprint have made our fair share of machine boards over the
years and they always seem to have a habit of disappearing never to be seen
again.
Now your not going to belive this but..
1. A few came back!
2. I think they are at least 7 years old.
How do I know this!?
'Old man Les' our handyman. (Sadly now passed away)
started to stamp our boards around 7 years ago, and these are
unmistakably built by Les, and are 'unstamped'.
Amazing !!
R.I.P Les, your work is still here being appresiated by us at Severnprint.

(and it's even coming back to us years later)

Action Stations

My work station....
When I have made ready, and the job is 'ran up' so that the color is
consistent on the sheet and that the colors fit together. One sheet
will be put on the back board at the start of the run, then the sheets
are checked throughout run to make sure they match and the job stays
consistent.

Monday Morning - Not a good start!

It's not nice to start Monday morning and find all your rollers from
unit 1 on the floor.
An unwritten rule is, that if you have taken somthing apart the you
should put it back before the next shift.
To be fair to 'Murco' my opposite number, he did offer to swap shifts.
Anyway, we had a whole set of brand spanking, new rollers to fit. (a
printer's joy)
It felt like Christmas had come early. ; )

We use this machine for cutting and creasing, ie if you've ever had a folder from Severnprint then it would have sure to have been cut out and creased on this 'wunderbar' of an old machine.

I've just been viewing these on YouTube and it has been strangely hypnotic.

Drilling

holes in laminated stock. Mike is our Bindery Guru, and there is
nothing our Mike doesn't know about Bindery. He's been here even
longer than me, and I've been here 15 or so years.

Hi-Tech, Mmmm

Hi-Tech, well not quite.

Here Craig is scrubbing his old school 'Moliten' dampers. This system does him very well on the 2col GTO, but I'm

really thankfull that we no longer use them on the bigger presses.

Now I'm writing this, it's got to be nearly 20 years since I did use them on our larger presses. Wow doesn't old technology take a long time to disappear from our trade!

I shall post another picture of another machine as proof of this, very soon.

SM/74 VDU

This display is telling us that we are running 4 colors (CMYK) at 12,000
impressions per hour (IPH),

and that 6,588 sheets have been printed so far.

In fact this screen will tell you absolutely everything that is happening

to the press at any given time, from here you are in 'almost' 100 percent control.

It will also tell you when it brakes down and what needs doing to get it up and running again.

The wonders of modern technology eh!

Damping....

It's my day off today but I thought I would blog this photo from
yesterday, it's of our old friend CMYK.
The ink is put into the 'Duct' where it starts it's travels through
rubber and nylon rollers onto a printing plate which has been damped &
developed by fount and mostly water, (no Alcohol remember.) Then onto a
rubber blanket before it ends up perfectly onto our sheets of paper or
board.
Bliss!
(Perhaps I shall make a small movie of this at a later date.)

Today we are in for a treat, Della's charity cup cakes for Breast Cancer.

Della claims they are all home baked.

Ok lets kick off this little printers blog with our first port of call, The ink.

C.M.Y.K.... Are the colors of Ink that most printers use the most.

The three primary colors are Cyan, C. Magenta, M. Yellow, Y.

K is for Black and named K for key, as it keys in the other 3 cols.

Good Eh!
